What's
in the neighborhood?
Next door
to the OLC is a trendy coffee house,
called "Charlie's Rhythm & Brews",
with live music and karaoke on some
nights. "Charlie's" is host to the OLC
Welcome Breakfast. On the other side of
the Oregon Language Center is a special
store called Movies and Magic. Movies and
Magic is the largest magic store in the
Willamette Valley, selling magic tricks,
jokes, and classic American movies on DVD.
The store owners have performed magic for
years in stage shows around the United
States and on television. Next door to the
magic shop is "In the Lens" photography
studio, with professional photographers
available to take group photos, portraits,
and fun American photos. A city bus stop
and bookstore are conveniently located at
the end of the block. There are several
good restaurants nearby. For kimchi and
Bento boxes, visit Toki Teriaki one-half
block away in the Two Rivers Mall, or in
the same mall, try the delightful Taqueria
Dos Arbolitos for authentic Mexican food.
Everything from sandwiches to pizza,
Italian to regional haute cuisine, is
available within a few blocks. In downtown
Albany, you will also discover an
old-fashioned movie theater, performing
arts theater, city park on the banks of
the Willamette River (host to weekly
summer music festivals), bicycle paths,
public swimming pool & tennis court,
library, post office, three small museums,
historic homes and churches, and unique
shopping venues selling everything from
fashions from Thailand to fly fishing
gear.
Although
Albany is a small town (population
45,000), it has everything you need for a
fun study-vacation (without the traffic
and hassle of bigger cities). But if
you're inclined to explore further, the
Amtrak train station is just 6 blocks
away, with service from Albany to West
Coast cities (such as Vancouver, Seattle,
Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles).
