10. What can I do on the weekends?

There are lots of fun things to do on the weekend. But before you make plans, please check with your host family.
Sometimes host families will arrange to take you to an out-of-town attraction. Here are some other ideas:
In Albany, within 1 mile of the OLC, you can:
  • Attend a summer festival.
  • Go golfing at the public golf course.
  • Attend a play at Albany Civic Theater.
  • Go fishing or swimming.
  • Attend a movie at Pix Theater.
  • Ride bikes, play tennis, or play frisbee golf in one of the parks.
  • Make a stained glass or fused glass piece at Glass Magic Images.
  • Practice Yoga at Sweet Yoga or fitness at the Recreation Center.
  • Paint ceramics at Sure Fire Ceramics.
  • Sing karaoke or go dancing.
  • Make jewelry at Spearit Beads.
  • Go shopping downtown
  • Catch a bus to the mall or bowling alley.
  • Rent a pedal boat on Waverly Lake or skateboard at the skateboard park.
  • Volunteer opportunities, and more!
Or, get out of town:
  • Take a Parks & Recreation day trip, such as hiking on Mt. Hood, or whitewater rafting. The trips are available through the City of Albany and must be reserved in advance. Check out their Activity Guide at http://www.cityofalbany.net/parks/.
  • Amtrak train station is just 6 blocks from the Oregon Language Center. Amtrak trains run between Vancouver, Canada and Los Angeles, California, stopping in Albany several times a day. Check schedules at http://www.amtrak.com.
  • Amtrak also has several intrastate buses, including one that travels to the quaint towns of Bend and Sisters in Eastern Oregon.
  • To spend a weekend at the beach, take the Valley Retriever bus to Newport. You will need to reserve a hotel room as the bus doesn't return the same day.
